Asin Menurut Sejarah?

Menurut sejarah terbentuknya air laut 4,4 milyar tahun yang lalu (usia air laut), air laut awalnya bersifat sangat asam dengan air yang mendidih (dengan suhu sekitar 100 °C) karena panasnya bumi pada saat itu. Asamnya air laut terjadi karena saat itu atmosfer Bumi dipenuhi oleh karbon dioksida (CO2). Keasaman air inilah yang menyebabkan tingginya pelapukan yang terjadi yang menghasilkan garam-garaman yang menyebabkan air laut menjadi asin seperti sekarang ini.

Kenapa Air Danau Tidak Asin? Padahal Airnya Juga Dari Daratan ?

Permukaan air danau tidak cukup luas, sehinggga penguapannya tidak begitu besar, maksudnya air yang menguap dengan air yang masuk ke danau masih seimbang dan sumber mineralnya sangat terbatas beda dengan laut yang sumber mineralnya dari berbagai penjuru dunia menjadi satu.

Kadar Keasinan Air Laut

Diperkirakan kadar garam laut di Bumi kita ini sekitar 5 x 10 pangkat 16 ton garam. Sebagai perbandingan Jika garam itu disebarkan di permukaan daratan di dunia ini tebalnya kira-kira 40 gedung bertingkat. Atau sekitar 1,02338 gram per kubik. Keasinan air laut lebih asin 220 kali daripada air-air di tempat lain.

Kadar garam (salinitas) bervariasi pada setiap lautan. Rata-rata salinitas Samudera sekitar 3,5%, artinya :
Dalam 1 liter (1000 mL) air laut terdapat 35 gram garam (terutama, namun tidak seluruhnya garam dapur/NaCl).

Salinitas laut tertinggi terdapat di Laut Merah, sedangkan yang paling tawar adalah di timur Teluk Finlandia dan di utara Teluk Bothnia, keduanya bagian dari Laut Baltik.
